Certaldo

Certaldo

Certaldo is an Italian town of 16,303 inhabitants [2] of the province of Florence in Tuscany, situated at the heart of Val d'Elsa. Boccaccio's birthplace, home to manybuildings of historic and artistic interest.

The most interesting part of the town is definitely Certaldo Alto. The main feature ofart and architecture, which has made it known and famous in Europe, is the perfectly preserved medieval urban fabric with its narrow streets and small squares here and there, if we exclude the renovations that have taken as an object Pretorionel fifteenth century Palazzo (works that transformed the old tower in the palace vicar), we can saythat Certaldo Alto has remained the same as how it has developed in the Middle Ages.

Further evidence of this feature is the lack of a large square in the center, and in its place we find a long and wide street (Via Boccaccio), who carried out the functions, representing the public place of excellence and high-concept typically medieval .However, those rooms will double in Certaldo Alto, the first is the square of SS.Annunziata, created in the early nineteenth century, paving an area that was previously set aside for gardens and crops in general and the other, SS. Jacob andPhilip, in front of the 'church of the same name, was originally used as a cemeteryinstead of the convent until 1633.
