San Gimignano
San
Gimignano is a town of 7,105 inhabitants situated in the Tuscan province of Siena.
For the typical medieval architecture of its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site of San Gimignano, despite some reversals eight-twentieth century, is mostly intact in appearance two-fourteenth century and is one of the bestexamples in Europe of urban organization of the communal.
The
Towers
San Gimignano is especially famous for fifteen medieval towers that still stand out onits landscape, which have earned him the nickname of Manhattan of the Middle Ages.Between the 72 towers and tower houses existing in the heyday of the City, itremained twenty-five in 1580 and today there are about fourteen officers, with otherdecapitate glimpse into the urban fabric. The oldest is Rognosa the tower, which is51 meters high, while the highest is the Torre del Podestà, also known as the TorreGrossa, of 54 meters. A regulation of 1255 forbade private citizens to build the tallest towers of the Torre del Podestà, even though the two most important families, andArdinghelli Salvucci, not being able to comply, they built two towers a little lower than the tower "Big"of almost equal size, to demonstrate its power.
